Indian history is full of the powerful actions taken by the common people which later became “the front-page headline” in the world. Fortunately, we are a country that stands against anything being done in the wrong way. That’s why we have a rich history of social movements in India. A social movement can be defined as the action taken or voice raised against anything that’s not resulting in the welfare of the nation. These movements have given numerous inspirational leaders to the country like Anna Hazare, Arvind Kejriwal, Mahatma Gandhi & many more.
The importance of social movements in India is huge. Because India is considered as the youngest country in the world & the youth should take responsibility for the future of the nation. There are 5 types of social movements- reactionary movements, reform movements, religious movements, self-help movements & revolutionary movements. We have witnessed all types of social movements in India. We had movements for democracy, independence, disagreements with the government in the past. One of the biggest social movement in India is explained in the following way:-
Quit India Movement
After the failure of the Cripps mission proposed by the British Prime minister Winston Churchill by sending Stanford Cripps to India, Mahatma Gandhi pledged to throw the English out of India. Gandhi Ji rejected the Cripps mission that was promising the dominion status, constituent assembly & declared it as a “Post-dated cheque “. Because it was favoring the British in every single way. In July 1942, Gandhiji initiated a mass movement against the British government from Wardha, Maharashtra. Later in August 1942, he declared it as the “Quit India movement”. Gandhiji gave the slogan of “Do or die”. He guided every section of society to protest in every way possible. He guided peasants to not pay a single penny as taxes. He guided Indian soldiers to not fire on their countrymen. He also ordered government employees to take actions according to the Congress ideology.
The whole nation was united & living for only one purpose- “Poorna Swaraj ”. Parallel governments took birth in different provinces. The British government reacted by putting all the leaders in jail. By December 1942, one lakh people were arrested. With the help of Nanka Motwani, the owner of Chicago radio, Usha Mehta started an underground radio where influential leaders like Ram Manohar Lohia & C Rajagopalachari were addressing people with their speeches. We witnessed unity, nationalism in the people of India which established the foundation for total independence. It was one of the most successful social movements in India.
